A Guide to Visiting the Vineyards of Sussex and Where to Stay
If you're dreaming of rolling vineyards, top quality wines, and cosy countryside charm, Sussex should be at the top of your list. With its gently sloping hills, coastal breeze, and chalky soils, it’s no wonder this region is gaining international acclaim for its wines.
For a memorable wine escape, I’ve handpicked three standout vineyards - Roebuck Estate, Ashling Park, and Tinwood Estate - all located within a scenic 30-minute drive of each other. And to tie it all together? The Horse and Groom in East Ashling. This welcoming country pub offers chic, comfortable rooms and delicious food, providing the perfect base to unwind, dine, and soak in all Sussex has to offer.
Roebuck Wine Estate
Nestled in the heart of the Sussex countryside, Roebuck Estate is known for its elegant, traditional method sparkling wines made from classic Champagne grape varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier - they also have a small crop of Pinot Précoce. The estate combines innovation with respect for time-honoured methods, producing wines that are beautifully structured and age-worthy.
I visited Roebuck for a tour in the vines and tasting, which took place in their beautiful vineyard, with views upon views of rolling rows.
Ashling Park
Ashling Park is an award-winning, family-owned vineyard, offering everything from tastings and tours to live music events like ‘Bubbles, Jazz, and Lobster Night’, ‘Cocktail Making Classes’ and much more. You can even book a lodge if you wish to stay at the estate, too. Ashling Park is just a 15 minute walk from the Horse and Groom, so you can leave your car at the pub and enjoy a countryside walk.
Tinwood Estate
Right on the edge of the South Downs National Park - and just a 15 minute drive from the Horse and Groom - Tinwood offers a relaxed and welcoming approach to English wine. Known for its bright and refreshing sparkling wines, the estate invites you to enjoy a guided tasting with a cheese board, or even stay overnight in one of their vineyard lodges. The vibe here is casual luxury, with a strong focus on great wine.
Where to Stay: The Horse and Groom
On my recent visit to Sussex, I stayed at the Horse and Groom. And not only did I have one of the best night’s sleep in a long time, I also fell in love with the character and charm.
The independently owned pub blends rustic character with stylish comfort. Each of the five boutique bedrooms has been individually designed with plush bedding, rich textures, and thoughtful details that make for a truly restful night - I spent about 2 hours just laying there freshly showered when I arrived, soaking up the calm.
After a day of wine tasting, it’s the perfect place to wind down, with a cocktail in the garden, followed by seasonal, locally-sourced food from homemade pies to juicy steaks, and delicate fish dishes. In the morning, another delicious meal awaits, with everything from croissants and yogurt and granola to scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, and a full English breakfast.
Best of all, its central location puts you within easy reach of all three vineyards.
The Horse and Groom is a two hour drive from London or less than 15 minutes from Chichester station.
