10 Wines Perfect For Summer

Summer is finally here - and what a summer it has been so far, with temperatures pushing 32 degrees celsius. While most of us would like to be poolside on days like this, the reality is most of us aren’t. But there is another way to cool off, and that’s with a cold, crisp glass of wine.

From refreshing bubbles to zesty whites, fruity rosés and even chilled reds, these are my summery sips to add to your wine fridge this summer.

1. Altos de Torona Albariño - Waitrose £15.00 (£12 on offer)

If you like crisp and fresh wines, like Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris, then Albariño is one to try. It's zesty, with a touch of apricot, lime and even a salty edge. Perfect for summer and delicious with seafood.

2. Codorníu Gran Crémant Eco Vintage Brut - Coop £11.20

Cava offers exceptional value when you're looking for an alternative to Champagne. Made by the same method as Champagne - a second fermentation in the bottle to get those vibrant bubbles - but using native grapes, it's a refreshing alternative and this one's rich, creamy, and delicious - and only £11.50.

3. Visio Vintners We The People Cape Blend 75cl - Tesco £9.50 (£8.50 Clubcard)

It's BBQ season and if there's anything the South African's know how to do it's cook over a fire. This South African red blend is predominantly Pinotage - a bold grape native to the country. You'll find a bottle at every BBQ.

Smooth. Fruity. And a little bit smoky. Pop yours in the fridge for 20 minutes then serve alongside your grilled lamb chops, burgers and charred veggies.

4. LB7 Vinho Verde - Majestic Wine £8.50

Not only is this wine just 10% ABV, it's aromatic, zesty, and has a tiny spritz, too. Vinho Verde is Portugal's flagship white and it's possibly one of the most refreshing wines on a warm day.

5. Graham Beck Rosé Brut NV - Waitrose £17 (£14)

These are my go-to bubbles. Cap Classique is South Africa’s answer to Champagne. This fizz is made in the same style, with the same grapes (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir), but it’s only £14 (on offer). Think strawberries and cream with a hint of zest.

6. Furleigh Estate Dorset Coast Special Reserve - Waitrose £25

This is a brilliantly priced English Wine at only £25. Furleigh Estate, based in Devon, is an award-winning vineyard, making a range of different wines. This zesty fizz is dry and refreshing, with flavours of bright citrus, apple and hazelnut. It’s perfect as an aperitif.

7. Tutiac 'Lion & The Lily' Sauvignon Blanc 2021/22, Bordeaux - Majestic £13

If you’re a fan of Sancerre (which is also made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape), then why not give this Bordeaux style a try? It’s zesty and light, with flavours of gooseberry and citrus. Try it with goats cheese and fresh salads.

8. Creation Chardonnay, South Africa - Marks & Spencer £10-£12 (unavailable online currently)

When I fancy a White Burgundy but can’t quite justify the spend, I look to South Africa. The microclimates of regions like Elgin and Hermanus are perfect for making Burgundy-esque Chardonnays. It’s still light and fresh, with flavours of apple and peach, lemon and pear, while a hint of oak, vanilla, cream and bring structure and body. Try it with creamy pasta and seafood dishes or roast chicken.

9. Mirabeau Pure Provence Rose - Tesco £16.50 (£14 Clubcard)

When it comes to the big rosé brands like Whispering Angel, Miraval and Mirabeau, Mirabeau will always win for me. Not only is it made by a wonderful, down-to-earth English family, the price point is bang on. Discover white peach, pear, and grapefruit zest, followed by flavors of red berries and citrus fruits.

It always seems to be on the Tesco Club Card offer. So if you don’t have one, do it for the Mirabeau.

10. M&S Undurraga Cinsault Itata - Ocado £10

Cinsault is my favourite red to drink in the summer. It’s light and fruity but carries an earthy floral note too. Pop it in the fridge for 30 minutes before serving, or hey, why not chill it all the way down - in this heat it will come up to the perfect temperature in the glass.
