10 Champagnes for World Champagne Day
Champagne is a luxury. But I like a glass of fizz, which is why I drink a lot of Champagne alternatives - like Crémant, Cava, and Cap Classique. But October 24th is World Champagne Day, so I think we can all afford to treat ourselves to a bottle of the proper stuff.
From supermarket staples to fine fizz, here are 10 Champagnes to celebrate World Champagne Day (and every day after that).
Pommery 'Brut Royal' Champagne £49, Majestic
Chardonnay dominant, this is a mid-range Champange.I love. It’s fresh and zesty yet a little bit creamy, with notes honey, almond, and brioche.
Devaux 'Oeil de Perdrix' Brut Rosé Champagne £30, Majestic
Strawberries, cream, and tart cranberries. This has been a go-to for me for a very long time (especially when you do the Mix Any Six deal).
Lanson 'Le Black Creation' Brut Champagne £46, Majestic
Aged for four years. Rich and ripe with orchard fruits, citrus, brioche and dried fruits.
Château de Bligny Grand Reserve £34.99, Laithwaites
I love finding a Grower Champagne and this is a good one. Step away from the Grand Maisons (the big brands) and try a smaller producer that often offers much better value for money.
Taittinger Brut Prestige Rosé Champagne NV £49, Waitrose
Made with a splash of red wine, it has a lovely pink colour and vibrant fruits to match.
Billecart-Salmon Brut Rosé Champagne £75, Majestic
Billecart makes pretty intense styles of Champagne and this one’s no different. Sip and savour this red berry fizz with a soft creaminess and fine bubbles
Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut £15.49, Aldi
If you’ve been following the newsletters for a while (and my Instagram), you would have seen that I gave this a raving review - and so did the top Champagne tasters. Baked apple, hints of red fruit and a lovely citrus edge. I’d stock up on this for Christmas.
Telmont Champagne Reserve Brut NV £52, Waitrose
I first tasted a vintage Telmont that was a good few years old and it knocked my socks off. The NV one is up there too. I’d spend my money on this over a lot of the other big brands.
Bruno Paillard Cuvee 72 3yrs Late Disgorged £67, Wanderlust Wine
Refined and elegant. Late disgorged means it has spent a long time sitting on lees (dead yeast), adding to the texture and complexity.
Krug Grande Cuvée Champagne £260, Majestic
If money was no object… people say you have to try this once in your life.
